Process

Below is a general process for all my design projects. I try to follow this as a guideline to gut check me if I am stuck, but different design projects typically emphasize different parts of this process.

  • 01

    Understand the problem space

I typically work with the Product Manager or the project sponsor to define the scope and objectives of the project. I use techniques like assumptions tracking, interviews, journey and systems mapping to make sure we are aligned on the goals and objectives.

  • Refine & align on the goals and vision

Apart from understanding the user needs and business goals, I break the work down into chunks, plan design sprints, run quick user surveys, create design principles or the north star vision to align on the goals, objectives, KPIs and scope.

    02

  • Explore happy path (s)

I define the user experience, test and evaluate design concepts, and analyze how my designs will inform behavior and craft the experience for the user. Lots of collaboration with engineering and other stakeholders or dependent teams.

    03

  • Iterate

I follow through with engineering sprints to conduct design audits. I then closely work with engineers to iterate on functionality prior to launch. Post-launch, I like to dive into the data and tracking metrics proactively using analytic tools such as Looker or Amplitude.
